A tsunami magnitude Mt was estimated for the
06-23-2001 Peru tsunami from far-field data.
A formula is Mt = log H + B
(Ref. Abe, K., JGR, 84, 1561, 1979)
H(max. amp.) n B Mt
California 0.09m 10 9.3 8.3
Aleutians 0.06m 7 9.3 8.1
Japan 0.15m 26 9.1 8.3
Hilo 0.40m 1 8.5 8.1
Honolulu 0.06m 1 9.3 8.1
H is the average of maximum amplitude and n is
the number of stations. The average of Mt is
8.18. Thus Mt is 8.2. This value is close to
Ms=7.9 of the USGS QED and Mw=8.0-8.1. I think
that the Peru event is not a "tsunami earthquake".
