Preliminary Results of Rupture Process for November 17, 2000 New Ireland Region, Papua New Guinea Earthquake (Ms 8.0)

Inversion was made using teleseismic data (provided by IRIS-DMC)

We assumed a single fault plane :(strike, dip) = (245, 34.), which is inferred from Teleseismic body wave analysis (EIC Seismological Note) . The rake was allowed to vary within the range of 80-45(degree).

Result

The seismic moment Mo = 1.5 x 10**20 Nm (Mw 7.4);
The source duration T = 40 s;
Fault mechanism: (Strike, Dip, Slip)=(245, 34, 69) ;
Hypocenter: (lat.= 5.49S, lon.= 151.66E, depth= 20 km).

Major slip occurred in a depth range of 30 - 50 km.

Waveform comparison

Comparison of the observed waveform (Black) with the calculated waveform (Red). The numbers below the station code indicate maximum amplitude in microns. The start time of the traces is lined-up at 10 (s) before the P- or S-wave arrival.
